A selection of Greek films either in English or with subtitles. An eclectic choice really, I think we must all have seen ‘Zorba’ but if you haven’t now is the time!
Shirley Valentine was originally a TV only film, today we have many Shirley Valentines on Crete as well as the other Greek Islands, it must be something in the water that makes the British and others fall in love with Crete and the inhabitants!
I remember seeing Never on Sunday when I was VERY young, part of the reason I always wanted to come to Greece, and, of course when you live here you discover that the song is not called ‘Never on Sunday’ and doesn’t even contain the word ‘Sunday’! This movie and ‘Stella’ below both star Melina Mercouri of course. ‘Stella’ was renowned for its, at the time, steamy love scenes
Irene Papas features high on the list of Greek movie stars and so there are two here, Electra and Trojan Women, both adaptions of Greek drama, and both directed by Kakogiannis, who directed ‘Zorba’
Those of us who have reached a certain age will remember ‘Moon Spinners’ when it first came out. It is in this selection for a reason - it was filmed on Crete. And it was filmed before the rapid tourist developments of the 1960’s. A chance to see things as they were?
Finally we had to include Captain Corelli, just because it is a lovely film!
