Although this is meant to be the mythology and language page we include this invaluable book on Greek Vases! The two books to the right are re-written versions. The ‘Read Aloud’ book is ideal for children and can also be used to bore your partner (who may not be interested in mythology1) to tears on the flight over!
The Iliad of course is a classic piece of Greek mythology and this translation is quite readable. Below right is also a very good book although a bit ‘dry’ in content, it gives all the main characters in great detail, although it omits a few details that would make your toes curl if you knew about them!
The language books are useful ones!
The Teach Yourself book will give you some good basic Greek in a short time, you need to be able to play the CD. The content is ‘Athenian Greek’ which means you can be understood everywhere. (Cretan Greek is sometimes not understood by folks from Athens!). But beware, speak a little Greek and everyone assumes you are fluent!
The Oxford Pocket dictionary is good provided you have quite big pockets
o the left the two phrase books are excellent, in fact they are both the same, except the Rough Guide version has swear words in it! Both contain some excellent useful phrases which you can adapt for your own use, the pronunciation guide is however different from the Teach Yourself book above
Never ever use the word ‘malaka’ by the way!
