Greek Music, Cinemas, and Culture

Crete Radio stations On Line

There are two multi screen cinemas in Iraklio. Foreign films here are
shown with the original audio soundtrack and Greek subtitles, and of course,
American films are in English with Greek subtitles. If you are an English only
speaker, this can put you at a disadvantage if the film was originally in some
language other than English, as it is most likely the soundtrack will be in
the original language with Greek subtitles!

In Hersonissos, the Creta Maris has an open air cinema during the summer
months, generally all the films shown have an English soundtrack with sub-
titles. The program usually changes once a week.

Greek TV also shows films nightly if you feel like a night in although the films
are of course usually older. Many bars also show films which you can watch
for the price of a beer!

If you are looking for live Cretan music, then your best bet is to look at the posters which can
often be found on power poles or fences, or outside bars where the performance is due to take
place! As far as I know  there is no web site which covers these live performances, which is a
shame as there are many truly excellent (and famous) Cretan musicians!
Pano Hersonissos village has a Cretan music night every Monday during the summer, ‘’entry’’
is free as it takes place in the village square, arrive early if you want a table at one of the bars
or restaurants as it is very busy! There are also demonstrations of Cretan dance, and if you have had
enough to drink you can have a go yourself.

There are also coach trips run from Hersonissos to other villages that hold ‘’Cretan nights’’ such as
Mochos and Anopoli.

And if you cannot wait until you get here, then try the following links for Cretan Radio and Giorgos
Zervakis own web site. They all have ‘listen live’ links and the Zervakis site has some downloadable
mp3 files.

Stigmes Magazine of Crete

STIGMES the magazine of Crete has some
interesting articles on Cretan music and musicians
you will find it through the link below.
Other events of interest during the summer months is a festival in Iraklio, details for
this have not yet been published, but it usually includes concerts, both Cretan music
and Classical, along with art exhibitions and so on. We will try to keep this page updated
with current information throughout the year!
