If you are anything like me then you will love poking your nose in where it has no right to be, so one of my greatest pleasures is to explore places on foot and follow little alleyways just to see where they lead. The guide books deal with Heraklion very quickly, mentioning mainly the big museum and Kazantzakis grave. Much of Heraklion has been rebuilt since the Second World War, but there remain many architectural gems hidden away, some restored and some not, making for a fascinatin mix of old and new.
In the network of small streets between Lion Square and the museum are many small cafes where you can happily sit and watch the world go by with a cup of coffee, and to restore the soul, a few minutes in St. Minas church will uplift the spirit.
If you have the time and energy you can walk almost the entire length of the Venetian city walls, visiting Kazantzakis grave, or just take a leisurely stroll around the daily market. Around the city you will find some buildings being re-used, one such is the old power house on the coast road which now houses the Natural History Museum, and a walk to the port to the Venetian Fort is also worthwhile.
If you enjoy a good market then we recommend a visit to the Thursday or Saturday market which is held on a dedicated site just off the main road to Knossos (follow the Knossos signs from the Port area) about 1.5km to the south from Macdonalds, watch for all the people with trolleys and bags!
On Tuesday there is also a market at Alikarnassos near the airport. If you are self catering these are ideal places to stock up on fruit, veg, cheeses, and so on, and you will be buying direct from the producer!
