Air travel is the most common way to travel to Crete. During the summer
there are charter and scheduled flights from many airports across Europe.
There are also regular flights from Athens with Aegean Airlines and Olympic,
all year round. During the coming winter flights are available for as little as €20
return plus taxes!
Ferries are still a popular way of travelling especially
for those cruising around the Greek Islands. During the
summer months there are up to four sailings a day from
Piraeus (Athens). In addition there are regular ferries to
Santorini, Rhodes, Samos and Naxos from Xania,
Iraklio and Agios Nikolaos.
Some cruises also make regular stops in Iraklio
but these only stay for a day and there is little time to
see much apart from Knossos and the main museum!
Driving is also an option if you have a little more time, and is a favourite
method for visitors working here for the summer. The driving distance is not
as great as you would think, for instance, from Brighton (UK) to Hersonissos,
the actual driving distance is around 1200 miles (2000km) and the ferry trip from
Italy to Greece, and the mainland to Crete, provide a welcome break from the
driving seat. If you want some suggestions for the best route avoiding tolls then ask.
Do make sure your insurance covers you for the period of your trip, most UK insurers
will automatically cover you with third party insurance at no extra cost, but only for
a limited time. Of course if you have been here before you will have noticed that there
are fewer parking restrictions than in, for example, the UK, and that quite large cars
will fit into quite small spaces.
Rental cars and scooters are a popular method for travelling during
your stay, most of the international companies have offices here, and
there is a multiplicity of smaller local companies operating in the area
who will rent a scooter or car to you. Very popular this year are
convertibles which you can hire for the day to cruise around in just to
see and be seen! Bicycles can also be rented although there are some
steep hills around the area.
Bus services run all over the island, and these are mainly modern
comfortable and air conditioned, although services can be infrequent
in outlying areas.
If you would like us to arrange for you to be met at
the airport with a hire car please let us know when
you book!
